Choose alternatives for five developer tools

Compare Bruno, Supabase, Coolify, Penpot and Plane before taking on their installation and upkeep.

Choose a replacement around the job you need: API testing, a backend, deployment, design or issue tracking. The projects below document different requirements and operating costs. [1][2][3][4][5]

Run API collections with Bruno

Bruno's CLI runs collections, folders and individual requests. After installing its CLI and opening a collection directory, the documented command is: [1]

bash
bru run

Use a test environment when requests can modify data.

Plan a Supabase installation

The Supabase guide has an automated Linux setup and a manual Docker setup. The automated path installs prerequisites and asks for your service URLs. Review its secrets, HTTPS and update instructions before exposing an instance. [2]

Check a server for Coolify

Coolify documents a minimum of 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM and 10 GB disk space for its own instance. Check the linked requirements against the applications you plan to host as well. [3]

Start a Penpot instance

With Docker and Compose installed, the Penpot guide provides these commands. Download and review the Compose file first. [4]

bash
curl -o docker-compose.yaml https://raw.githubusercontent.com/penpot/penpot/main/docker/images/docker-compose.yaml

Then start the services:

bash
docker compose -p penpot -f docker-compose.yaml up -d

You should see Penpot at localhost:9001. Follow its backup and HTTPS instructions before using it for production work. [4]

Select Plane's intended edition

Plane's main Docker guide starts with Commercial Edition. Its separate Community Edition section downloads a different setup script. Follow that section if you want Community Edition; do not assume the first installer selects it. [5]

Before moving real projects, check how you will export data and restore a backup from each tool you choose.
