Use less context before raising your AI plan
Keep chats focused, reuse project files and choose effort levels that fit the task.

Long conversations, large attachments and unnecessary tool calls can use more of your allowance. Start by changing what goes into a task before deciding that you need a larger plan [1].
Match effort to the task
Anthropic's Claude Code guidance recommends Sonnet for routine coding and reserves Opus for harder work because Opus uses more quota [3].
OpenAI describes ChatGPT's Instant setting as suitable for everyday questions, with higher thinking settings for work that needs them. Available choices and limits depend on the plan and workspace [4]. Neither provider promises a fixed saving from changing the model.
Reuse project material
Claude caches project content, so reused material can count less against usage while it remains cached. Caches expire after inactivity [1]. Put recurring reference documents in the project, and remove files that no longer help the work.
Keep tools and thinking purposeful
Claude's guidance recommends disabling unused connected apps and avoiding web searches when current information is unnecessary. On models that offer a thinking toggle, switch it off for simple work; on always-thinking models, lower the effort level [2].
Keep search enabled when the answer depends on current facts. Saving a tool call is not useful if the answer relies on outdated information.
Check your own allowance
Claude's Settings > Usage shows consumption and reset information for supported plans [1]. ChatGPT displays allowance resets when available; its limits differ by model, plan and workspace [4]. Check those controls before starting a long task. A new chat changes the context, not the reset time.
