# Use assisted permissions in Copilot and Claude Code

> Reduce routine approval prompts while keeping documented permission rules and review limits.

Copilot assisted permissions and Claude Code auto mode can review actions before they run, according to their docs [1][2]. I would start with a single session so you can see which requests still reach you.

## Enable assisted permissions for one Copilot session

GitHub documents this command for the interactive CLI [1]. Enter it at the Copilot prompt.

```text
/permissions assisted
```

Check the active mode:

```text
/permissions show
```

You should see the session's permission mode. Eligible requests get a model review; requests requiring your decision still prompt you. Existing deny rules and enterprise restrictions remain in force [1].

## Make Copilot remember your preference

For new interactive sessions, GitHub documents this setting in your user configuration. Merge the field into your existing file [1].

```json title="~/.copilot/settings.json"
{
  "defaultPermissionMode": "assisted"
}
```

Managed defaults can take precedence, and resumed sessions retain their saved mode. To return the current session to manual review, enter [1]:

```text
/permissions manual
```

## Check Claude Code's rules

Anthropic documents this command for inspecting permission rules and their source files [3]. Use it before changing how actions are approved.

```text
/permissions
```

You should see the configured rules. A matching ask rule can still require approval in auto mode [2][3].

## Start Claude Code with auto mode

Anthropic documents the permission-mode flag for selecting auto mode [2]. Run it in your project terminal.

**Warning:** Auto mode allows actions after model review. Anthropic explicitly says it does not guarantee safety; keep sensitive operations under review [2].

```bash
claude --permission-mode auto
```

If auto mode is unavailable, check the account, model and administrator requirements on the linked permission-mode page. Do not substitute bypass permissions to get past that refusal [2].

Your next session now uses the mode you chose. Keep `/permissions` available when an unexpected approval or denial needs inspection.
