Check packages before trusting an AI suggestion

Inspect package provenance, lockfile hosts and known vulnerabilities before accepting new dependencies.

Published · 5 sources

An AI-generated package name needs the same review as any new dependency. These tools check package metadata, suspicious code, download hosts and known vulnerabilities, per their documentation. [1][2][3][4][5]

Review an npm package before installation

The npq README documents this install command. It checks package characteristics before handing installation to your package manager. [1]

bash
npm install -g npq

Its usage example installs Express after the checks. Replace that name only after confirming the package you intend to use. [1]

bash
npq install express

Inspect package code with GuardDog

After installing GuardDog through its documented setup, its npm scan command checks a package for suspicious behavior. The README uses this example. [2]

bash
guarddog npm scan express

Review findings before deciding whether to install the package.

Restrict lockfile download hosts

For an npm lockfile, the post's supplied command checks the allowed registry host and HTTPS URLs. The lockfile-lint README documents those checks. [3]

bash
npx lockfile-lint --path package-lock.json --type npm --allowed-hosts npm --validate-https

You should see no findings when the file passes, per the README. [3]

Scan installed dependencies for advisories

Grype scans filesystems and container images for known vulnerabilities. Use its linked installation and scan-target documentation for your project type. [4]

For Python requirements, pip-audit documents this command. [5]

Warning: pip-audit can resolve dependencies and is not a malicious-code detector. Its security model says to audit only input you would trust to install. [5]

bash
pip-audit -r ./requirements.txt

The report lists known vulnerabilities and available fixes. A clean report leaves provenance and application-specific review for you. [5]
